Uchenna Onwuamaegbu Ugwu’s inspiring story: Why the Wealthy Must Give Back to Society

The Duty of the Wealthy to Society

Rich people in our society should start thinking of investing in people. Society is entitled to a fraction of their success. That’s why governments demand taxes and why concepts like Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) exist. Until we learn to invest in society without making it transactional, society will perish—and with it, our interests.

A Story of True Impact: Uchenna Onwuamaegbu Ugwu

Uchenna Onwuamaegbu Ugwu is a name every Nigerian should know. Her story is a testament to why investing in people can change lives. Born into a humble background, Uche faced hardships as a young girl. However, she refused to let her circumstances define her future. She understood the struggles of poverty firsthand, and because of her experiences, she dedicated her life to uplifting young girls from low-income families.

Changing Lives Through Education

In 2018, Uche took five teenage girls from Regina Pacis Secondary School, Onitsha, to California for a global competition—and they conquered the world. Despite this achievement, she didn’t become a national treasure. She still struggled, still drove a troublesome Honda CRV, and still worked tirelessly to ensure that young girls from poor backgrounds had opportunities.

Since meeting her in 2020, I have celebrated her every year. For most of her free workshops for girls in Onitsha, I shared her story on social media. Yet, my voice alone wasn’t enough. Those who truly want to save the world remain unstoppable, and Uche was no exception.

Overcoming Challenges to Make a Difference

Uche tirelessly advocated for equipping young girls with digital skills. Sometimes, she found support; other times, she faced rejection. In 2021, her persistence paid off. The Federal Government, under Buhari’s administration, approved a NITDA center for Onitsha. While the government agreed to furnish the facility, Uche had to provide the physical space. This became another major challenge.

Finding a suitable center was difficult. I even offered her my office at New Market Road, but it wasn’t big enough. Thankfully, Celestine and Don Ebubeogu stepped in and provided an office space. With this, the government equipped it, and today, over a thousand girls and young people in Onitsha have benefited from this project.

The Road to Harvard and More Struggles

In 2023, Uche was admitted to Harvard University to study Artificial Intelligence. Her tuition alone was over $55,000. Seeking assistance was necessary. People needed to know Uche, understand her mission, and support her cause.

At first, she reached out to wealthy individuals in Anambra State, but the responses were disheartening. She endured sleepless nights, often calling from the U.S. in tears. When things got tough, she made a bold move—publicly asking for donations on social media.

Then, Don Ebubeogu not only donated but also encouraged others to do the same. This act of kindness brought Uche to tears. Many who understood the importance of human capital pitched in. Even the Obi of Onitsha sent a token and a prayer to support her, recognizing her impact despite her not being a native of Onitsha. Still, Uche couldn’t raise the full amount and had to take an education loan in the U.S.

Uche’s Impact on Onono Community

Uche didn’t just go to Harvard for personal growth. While there, she tirelessly advocated for the poor people in Onono, Anam, a remote community in Anambra State. This village had no electricity and was disconnected from the modern world. Through her advocacy, she attracted individuals who understood the spirit of Ubuntu—our shared humanity.

Today, because of Uche’s efforts, Onono has its first solar-powered classroom, bringing light and digital skills to children who once had no access to such opportunities.

The Power of Giving

If a society is poor, everyone in it is technically poor. The wealthy must invest in people—not just as an act of charity, but as a long-term strategy for societal stability. A failing system will eventually affect everyone, including the rich.

Giving should not always be transactional. Not everything is about naira and kobo. Supporting education, skill development, and community projects strengthens the system, making it safer and more prosperous for all.

There’s a reason communities in Nigeria once raised money to train their brightest minds. There’s a reason why donors offer grants to entrepreneurs. Until we learn to prioritize society, our own dreams will remain out of reach.

Final Thoughts

Investing in people is not just a moral duty—it is a necessity. Uchenna Onwuamaegbu Ugwu’s inspiring story proves that one person’s dedication can transform thousands of lives. Imagine what could happen if more people followed her lead.

If you have the means, start today. Invest in people, and together, we will build a future where no one is left behind.
