Discovering the Craft: Cane Furniture Artistry in Anambra

I met Alex Nwiribor by surprise. He is from Ebonyi State but has been living in Anambra State for many years. He is a cane furniture maker. However, in just one business, I found in him an honest and diligent artisan.

It happened that I was on my way to my friend’s father’s burial in Ihiala in October when I saw a man in his shop working on a cane chair. He is a lanky, fair fellow who reminds me of the legendary ‘Mike Oli ife di mma,’ and I told him so. The sight of his amazingly designed table brought me to a halt, and I had a little chat with this craftsman.

I had already started working on a cultural space in Onitsha but never considered using a cane chair. However, seeing what Alex could produce with canes, I started imagining the effect of cane furniture in my space. Then, I went to the Ochanja market and saw a set of cane chairs. The dealers wouldn’t remove a penny from N60,000. To me, it was a fair price, but I decided to find out how much Alex would charge for the same set of furniture, and you won’t believe the difference.

I saved N15,000!

But that wasn’t all. Alex told me the set would take a week and 2 days but called me after 6 days to come and collect my chairs. His work was extremely tidy, and I wonder why such a talent is still playing in a humble league.

Our conversation extended beyond the world of cane furniture. I learned about Alex’s journey, his passion for his craft, and the pride he took in every creation. It was a conversation that left me inspired and reminded me of the exceptional talents that often remain hidden within our communities.
