Ashoka Africa in Anambra State
Ashoka Africa, a renowned movement, has brought its “Everyone a Changemaker” vision to Anambra State, Nigeria, with a focus on culture and education. This groundbreaking initiative, launched in partnership with the Anambra State Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Entertainment, aims to empower young people and equip them with lifelong changemaking skills.
The initiative, titled Changemakers for Culture and Education (CACE), was kicked off in Awka on January 23rd. The event, held at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat Hall, centered on integrating core Igbo values like respect, honesty, and hard work into the educational system.
A Call to Revive Cultural Values
The event featured prominent figures, including the Anambra State Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment, and Tourism, Mr. Don Onyenji. Mr. Onyenji emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage and lamented the erosion of traditional values due to Westernization. He highlighted the need to instill these values, such as hard work and honesty, back into the educational system to combat negative trends like cybercrime.
Equipping the Next Generation
Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, the Anambra State Commissioner for Education, represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Ifeoma Agbaizu, echoed Mr. Onyenji’s sentiments. Dr. Agbaizu emphasized the importance of instilling core values like focus and integrity in students. She highlighted the role of parents and teachers in guiding students towards a proper educational path and away from shortcuts.
Celebrating Igbo Culture
The event also featured a representative from the Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC), who underscored the importance of cultural education. Igbo culture, known for its emphasis on hard work, good character, and proper behavior, was presented as a model for the younger generation.
Ashoka Africa’s Vision
Mr. Okechukwu Uzoechina, Co-Leader of Ashoka Africa, explained the organization’s mission of empowering individuals to become changemakers. The CACE initiative aligns with this vision by equipping young people with the skills and mindset to tackle societal challenges and create a better future.
Moving to Onitsha
Following the successful launch in Awka, the CACE initiative moved to Onitsha on January 24th. There, Ashoka Africa engaged with young people, youth leaders, influencers, and media representatives. They also met with Rev. Fr. Dr. Osy Aloy Orakwe, a respected priest and media icon, to discuss media’s role in promoting CACE across the South-East region and explore potential partnerships.
A Pan-Nigerian Movement
Ashoka Africa’s efforts extend beyond Anambra. The organization has activated teams of co-leaders in Enugu, Lagos, Abuja, and Kaduna, with plans to reach Calabar and Yola. These teams work with local communities to organize events, workshops, and programs that promote changemaking through education and cultural awareness.
The CACE initiative presents a promising approach to youth development in Anambra State. By harnessing the power of culture and education, Ashoka Africa empowers young people to become responsible citizens and agents of positive change.
